The Problem

You've used your iPhone for years, but Apple buries some of its most useful features with zero fanfare. No prompt, no tutorial, just hidden gestures and settings waiting to be found. Here are the ones people say they can't believe they lived without.

The Fix

The single most loved trick feels like magic the first time you try it:

  1. Draw a perfect shape in Markup. While marking up a photo or screenshot, draw a circle, arrow, line, square, or heart, then keep your finger pressed at the end. Your rough sketch snaps into a clean, perfect shape. (Scribble over something, hold, and it erases what was underneath.)
  2. Open your photo library faster in Messages. Instead of tapping through the menu, press and hold the plus button in any conversation to jump straight to your photos.
  3. Turn on Background Sounds. Your iPhone can play white noise, rain, or a babbling stream on its own or under your music. Find it in Control Center or under Settings, Accessibility. It's a lifesaver for tinnitus, focus, or layering over noise-cancelling AirPods on a flight.
  4. Let your iPhone screen scam calls. With call screening on, your phone asks unknown callers who they are and what they want, transcribing in real time so you decide whether to answer. Plenty of users say it has killed spam calls entirely.
  5. Make any QR code clickable. Screenshot it, open it in Photos, and the link becomes tappable, so you never have to point your camera at someone else's screen. If it's on a webpage, just long-press it.
  6. Pull up Apple Pay instantly by double-tapping the side (wake) button at checkout, instead of fumbling through your home screen.
  7. Jump to the top of any page by tapping the clock or the top edge of the Dynamic Island.

A note on version differences: a few favorites are model-locked, like recording landscape selfie video in portrait (iPhone 17 and newer) and adjusting the flashlight beam width (Pro models). If a trick doesn't appear for you, your model or iOS version is usually why.

Pro Tips

  • Reprogram the Action button to run a Shortcut, like toggling your smart lights when you're home or running Shazam when you're out.
  • Use Focus modes like virtual desktops. Each one can swap your wallpaper, home screen apps, widgets, and notifications, and switch automatically by time of day.
  • Convert units instantly: type something like 40lbs, highlight it, tap the arrow, and see grams, kilograms, and ounces. The Calculator app also does live currency conversion.
  • Hold the space bar to turn the keyboard into a trackpad and drag your cursor exactly where you want it.
  • Set a sleep timer that stops playback: in the Clock timer, scroll the sound list to the bottom and choose Stop Playing so media cuts off after you doze off.

Why This Works

Apple hides power-user features on purpose so casual users aren't overwhelmed, which means the best ones spread by word of mouth instead of showing up in a menu. Learn even a handful of these gestures and your phone quietly does more with far fewer taps.
